Honduras is among the countries with the highest homicide rates in the world with 75 per cent of murders committed with weapons鈥揳 figure significantly higher than the global average. The prevalence of firearms feeds into the country's problems with organised crime and criminal gangs.

Honduran firearms regulations are weak and lead to delays in the processing of ballistics data, the disappearance of critical information, and ineffective use of this data to prosecute criminals.  

Since 2017, with the support of the US Government, HALO has been working with the Honduran Ministry of Defence, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police to create a safer future for the people of Honduras.  

 

HALO works the area of Security Sector Reform, woring on weapons and ammunition Management (WAM) to destroy obsolete weapons and ammunition, and to prevent unplanned explosions and the diversion of firearms to organised crime. At the same time, we strive to ensure the meaningful participation of women and other minority groups in the security forces. 

As part of our work, we deliver specialised courses in the handling of small arms, ammunition, and run explosive ordnance disposal training. These courses equip officers to adopt best practices in line with international standards for small arms and ammunition.

Our Work

Managing weapons & ammunition

HALO, with the support of the United States Government, is working with the Honduran Public Ministry and National Police to create a safer future for the people of Honduras. Together, we are establishing a transparent weapons destruction program and assisting with upgrading weapons stores to ensure they are secure. To make the project sustainable, we are complementing these activities with a series of weapons storage and stockpile management training courses, ensuring the armed forces in Honduras have the skills to deal with the problem independently in the years to come.

OUR IMPACT

With funding from the United States Government we work with the Honduran local authorities to destroy and manage weapons and ammunition and build a safer future for local people.

Meet Our Team in Honduras

Country Manager Honduras
Tom joined HALO in Central America on August 1, 2023. Previously, Tom worked as a director in the child and adolescent sectors, as well as in education, in South America and Europe. He is a professional in journalism and education, holding degrees in both fields.

Project Administrator
Liliana Rivera joined HALO in November 2023 as a Project Administrator in Honduras. She graduated in Administration with a Master鈥檚 Degree in Project Management and Health Services Management from the Catholic University of Honduras and has over 17 years of experience in the administrative and accounting sectors within banking, education, health, customer service, and non-profit institutions.

Liliana Rivera

Accountant
Licy joined HALO in November 2023. Previously, Licy worked in financial-accounting roles within both public and private sector companies, as well as in non-profit organisations focused on education and human rights.

She holds a degree in Public Accounting and Finance from the National Autonomous University of Honduras, as well as a Master's degree in Business Administration and Financial Management from the University of Cadiz and Formato Educativo.
